Otsikko 'In Various Stages of Ruins' [Useissa Raunioitumisen Vaiheissa] on muistutus 'raunioitumisen' jatkuvasta muodostumisesta.

Projektia on toteutettu osana residenssiorganisaatio HIAP:in suomalais-venäläiseen yhteistyöhön keskittyvää Connecting Points-ohjelmaa.

[ENG] This exhibition at Alkovi's display window space at Helsinginkatu, as well as online is an outlet for a research project that has been conducted over the past three years. The project developed as an examination of the concepts of knowledge formation, information distribution, landscape, travelling, memory, history, museums and ruins. It is an artistic research project - tackling the methods and means that artists work with when embarking on a mission of discovery and expedition. In this case, in connection with 'Russia; and the multiplicity of perspectives tied to it (as a country; as a geographical terrain with a history and culture attached to it, with a past and a present.) But it is also a constant true fiction - a notion of 'Russia' we form when trying to describe it.

In this project we have wanted to focus on counter-balancing the need for A result that would distill the things experienced, looked at or worked with, by offering some continuity and versatility in the presentation. Whilst the encapsulating of temporal processes is impossible, it is also inevitable - it is the task that artists and other cultural producers embark on when presenting their perspectives and findings - when formulating artworks.

This exhibition is the first part in a series of exhibitions that depict different aspects of the things encountered - along the way - in this project. The title 'In Various Stages of Ruins' is a reminder of the constantly forming and gradual process of 'ruinification' It links to the idea of progress, that without its derelict inverse of chaos and loss, it would be insufficient to make new compositions and arrangements. As in the life-cycle of materials, nothing is a ruin permanently, a ruin is a testament to the past in present. With the notion of 'looking at what's here' we aimed to think about the possibilities and actualities of our cultural and lived environment.'Denial' is the subtitle of our first instalment, it points to the inability to present "everything" - as with something 'denied entry' even though this act of limiting becomes productive - framing, enabling, allowing those things to be present that one is seeking to activate. It is also concretely related to safe-guarding one's belief-systems; as in denial of things that don't fit or make sense. Even though the effectiveness of denial (of something that seems counter-factual) is proven to be a sound tactic for sustaining the ability to think and act, self-delusional denial is the act of stubborn resistance to new concepts and possibilities. The ability to move on (foreign) terrain necessitates accepting elemental unfamiliarity.

The three works presented here in this instalment as an exhibition approach the project's subject matter by forming an archive (a database) - sounds collected from the experience of train travel and accessible only at the location of Alkovi; the installation of a fabric sentence from Svetlana Alexievich's book: Secondhand Time, stretched across two derelict sites in the cities of Vyborg and Vladivostok; and a Cheburashka collection, a character of Soviet era children's literature from author Eduard Uspensky, according to whom it is "an animal unknown to science".

These perspectives also begin to resonate with each other and form entry-point(s) that provide access to the viewer/audience into this ongoing inquiry, which will continue through further instalments of objects and artworks across this year.

A text that presents and extends thoughts on the themes and issues of this project is available as an ongoing publication process through the blog platform: https://invariousstagesofruins.wordpress.com

This project is done with the support of Kone Foundation (2017-2019) - initially starting as a project dealing with propaganda and disinformation as themes - and with the support of The Finnish Cultural Foundation (2019-2020) focusing on east-bound train travel as an opportunity for artistic work. The project has been done in the context of the Finnish-Russian Exchange programme Connecting Points, of the residency organization Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP).

[ENG] Eero Yli-Vakkuri is a design-oriented performance artist, who works primarily in public spaces. In the past he has made street interventions that deliberately made people uncomfortable; presently he is advancing sustainable design through campaigns, workshops and artistic presentations. He focuses on sound in an effort to understand how it builds and informs groups, and also learning to make artificial mineral waters in order to study the effects mineral deposits have on human habitats.
